Artistic residence of LandArt – Poland

WHAT IS AN ARTISTIC RESIDENCE?
Artist residencies have become intrinsic to many artistic careers. They play an important role in facilitating and catalysing artists’ ability to move across the world. They have also developed into important elements in the (local) contemporary art scene connecting the local and global art worlds. The artists participating in residency programmes build bridges between countries and cultures contributing to cultural diversity. Artist residencies are an invaluable adjunct to short-term cultural exchanges, as they permit artists to develop a deeper understanding of their host societies and cultures. At the same time they create opportunities for giving insights into the cultural background of each participating artist’s own background. Consequently, artistic and cultural exchange and cooperation through residency programmes can increase understanding between countries and cultures. All of this is particularly vital in times of political and economic tension and when public opinion and attitudes across Europe are exhibiting signs of cultural intolerance.

WHERE WILL IT BE HELD AND WHEN? The residence is organized by the Polish cultural centers of Michalowo, GOK and CPL Sokole. The residence will be held in CPL Sokole, a cultural center located in Sokole (16-050), a village in Poland, located in Podlaskie Province, Białystok District, Michałowo Commune. The works will be shown in the adjacent forest, creating a permanent open-air museum. The residence will be held from 1 September to 15 September 2019. The artists’ arrivals are scheduled for September 1st. Working on the art itself will begin on day. On September 13th the works and event planning will be completed. The opening of the exhibition will be on September 14th, and will take place in the woods. There will be various exhibitions such as performances, video-art, sound-art and videomapping. The departure of the artists is scheduled for September 15th.

WHAT’S THE THEME ?
The theme is “Memories and emotions of the forest”.

INFORMATION ABOUT WORKS OF ART
The LAND ART works realized can be artistic installations, sculptures, but we are open also for representation of performances , sound-art, art-videos and videomapping. In the case of performance, art-video and video mapping, on September 14th there will be an official event, where the opening of the exhibition in the woods will be held. The art-video will be reproduced and there will be the performances. The works will be SITE SPECIFIC, that is an intervention that is thought and fits in a precise place. The interaction with the surrounding environment is close and refers to all aspects of its identity, from history to architecture, from spatial structure to culture. This particular discipline transforms entire environments into works that can be traversed and experienced on a performative level by the visitor. The event aims to promote art, the environment, nature, culture and landscape. The artistic residence of LAND ART wants to be an opportunity for connecting contemporary art and landscape, in which the artistic creation becomes an instrument of knowledge of the territory and a moment of reflection on the themes of environmental sustainability and ecology. The works, which the artists will create SITE SPECIFIC, drawing inspiration from the place and using only natural materials, will constitute an itinerary between sculpture and landscape, accessible to those visitors who are attentive and sensitive to environmental protection. In addition to making potential users aware of the attractions and resources present in Sokole. During their first days of residence, the artists will visit the forest and choose what to do and where to do it.

The proposed works must meet the following requirements:
(a) The use of natural and semi-durable organic material such as wooden logs and their sections, branches, roots, soils, various plants, straw or other material that is already present on the site. It is absolutely forbidden: to introduce other types of seeds of plants not found in this area, use any type of fire and destroying living nature.
b) For the realization of the works, in addition to the use of organic material present in the places that will host the event, the use of unpainted raw iron, natural fiber ropes, mineral or vegetable pigments, clays, sands, stones and everything that is 100% biodegradable is allowed.
c) The work may also marginally involve the use of non-biodegradable materials for the purposes of construction, such as iron wire, or iron screws. Artificial or processed materials such as plastic, glass, metals (with the exception of the above), fabrics, painted materials or inked paper, etc., will not be allowed.
d) Any glues and dyes used shall be of natural biological origin.
e) The project must be designed to withstand the elements and to meet the requirements of longevity and robustness of the work.

In addition to the materials that artists can search for and take directly from the forest, the organization will make available: string, wire, screw, natural glues, logs, clay, straw.
